Prologue

The 4th generation in her family to be raised on an Indian reservation, Cherie Rodgers grew up immersed in the oral history of one of the great tragedies of this country.


Chapter 1
Groovy Shoes

In the basement of city hall, Rodgers interviews for the vacant seat of a city councilman who had mysteriously disappeared.


Chapter 8

The Christmas Complaint

Part 1
Just before Christmas 2000, Rodgers and other Cowles critics on the city council learn they are being personally sued by Betsy Cowles for publicly criticizing her mall. Rodgers visits her husband’s grave to tell him that he, too, is named in the lawsuit. The action shifts to their early years of marriage.
 
Part 2
While stationed in Germany, Army Ranger Steve Rodgers is stricken by a brain tumor. After Steve’s surgery is hopelessly botched, Cherie enters a prolonged nightmare in the hospital at Landstuhl.
 
Part 3
Cherie’s hopes are kindled when she manages to get her comatose husband transferred to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C.
 
Part 4
With her mother babysitting their three children back in Germany, Cherie embarks on an arduous journey, trying to coax her husband back to the land of the living.
 
Part 5
In 1986, Steve and Cherie move to Spokane, Washington. Even the doctors are astonished at the patient’s unusual recovery.
